Understanding Drug & Alcohol Addiction in Nevada

Nevada’s Addiction Trends: A Closer Look at the Challenges
Nevada is known for its vibrant cities and world-class entertainment, but it also faces serious substance use challenges. Alcohol and drug misuse affect individuals and families in every corner of the state—from Las Vegas and Reno to rural desert towns. The data shows that addiction is not just a big-city issue; it’s a statewide concern, and it’s one we’re here to help address.
According to the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, opioids remain one of the most pressing public health crises in the state. In 2022 alone, Nevada saw over 1,000 drug overdose deaths, with fentanyl accounting for a large percentage. Synthetic opioids like fentanyl are particularly dangerous because they are often combined with heroin, meth, or counterfeit pills, increasing the risk of accidental overdose—even with a single use.
Methamphetamine use has also surged in Nevada, especially in northern and rural regions. Meth is cheap, highly addictive, and often leads to long-term physical and mental health issues.
Alcohol addiction is another ongoing concern in the state. Nevada consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for alcohol consumption, with binge drinking rates at 19% of adults, above the national average. Approximately 2,000 people die from excessive alcohol use in the state every year. Easy access, cultural norms, and high-stress work environments all contribute to problem drinking in many communities, including among hospitality and service industry workers.
Among younger populations, marijuana, vaping, and prescription drug misuse are on the rise. The Nevada Youth Risk Behavior Survey reports that nearly 40% of high school seniors have used marijuana, and nearly 20% have misused prescription painkillers without a prescription.
