What is a Residential Treatment Hospital?

Providing a therapeutic, medically supervised environment to treat individuals with acute psychiatric emergencies and co-occurring drug addiction, Hickory Behavioral Hospital (HBH) is a state-of-the-art inpatient (residential) facility serving adults of all ages in the northeastern Texas area. Dedicated to ensuring all patients receive the highest quality of care possible, HBH incorporates evidence-based treatment programs to compassionately address the following:

  • Severe depression and/or anxiety
  • Symptoms of schizophrenia and/or psychosis (delusions, paranoia, hallucinations)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Severe or acute behavior changes associated with Alzheimer’s/dementia or mental illness
  • Need to adjust psychotherapeutic medications

BHB offers a separate dual diagnosis unit for people with a substance abuse disorder and mental illness. We also have a specialized geriatric unit that is explicitly designed to accommodate patients with moderate to severe behavioral symptoms attributed to Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Benefits of Short-term Residential Treatment On Your Mental Health

Substance Abuse (Alcohol, Illegal Drugs, Prescription Medications)

Our intensive, personalized programs foster rapid progress in a nurturing environment. Benefit from comprehensive therapy, constant support, and top-tier medical care. With us, you’re not just treated, you’re empowered for sustained wellness. Choose Hickory Behavioral Hospital for a life-changing journey to recovery.

Substance abusers who are diagnosed with a mental illness are given a “dual diagnosis” that requires professional intervention from addiction and mental health therapists. Dual-diagnosis patients treated for their specific mental disorder and substance addiction receive one or more therapeutic interventions and are prescribed medications to improve symptoms of their addiction and mental illness.

HBH currently utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. These techniques help dual-diagnosis patients resolve past and present obstacles that have stopped them from coping productively with painful memories and emotions.

All patients admitted to HBH’s residential treatment hospital can choose to participate in a variety of evidence-based therapies. In addition, they will receive comprehensive assistance and care from licensed counselors, nurses, social workers, dietary specialists, psychiatrists, and recreation therapists.

Geriatric Services for Adults with Alzheimer’s or Dementia

As Alzheimer’s or dementia progresses, the person affected often undergoes personality and behavior changes that can be difficult to control. Family members seeking help for a loved one’s worsening Alzheimer’s/dementia describe how their elderly parent or grandparent will suddenly become extremely angry or aggressive for no reason, hide things in the home like food or keys, and expose themselves at odd times.

We also provide guidance for non-behavioral signs of Alzheimer’s or dementia, such as:

  • Difficulty standing still and walking/balance issues
  • Inability to button shirts, write legibly or perform other tasks involving fine motor skills
  • Engaging in repetitive behaviors such as hand-wringing, face-picking, or washing the same dish over and over again
  • Problems with bladder/bowel control
  • Hand tremors/shaking

While these are common behaviors of someone with moderate to severe dementia, they can be upsetting to family members who want to help their loved ones but don’t know how. Hickory Behavioral Hospital wants you to know that we are available 24/7 to provide experienced, empathetic treatment methods to address your loved one’s unique mental and emotional needs.
