Understanding Drug & Alcohol Addiction in Indiana

Indiana's Substance Use Challenges
Indiana has been significantly affected by the nationwide addiction crisis, particularly when it comes to opioids and methamphetamine. In recent years, drug-related deaths and alcohol-related hospitalizations have climbed steadily, impacting families and communities across the state. According to state data, opioid overdoses now account for nearly 8 out of 10 drug-related deaths in Indiana. In 2022 alone, the state reported over 2,600 drug overdose deaths—one of the highest rates in the Midwest.
But opioids aren’t the only concern. Methamphetamine use is rampant in many rural counties, and alcohol misuse remains a leading contributor to health issues and emergency room visits. In fact, 16% of Indiana adults report binge drinking on a regular basis. Alarmingly, alcohol-related deaths in Indiana have now surpassed 3,800 per year.
Youth substance use is another area of concern. While some progress has been made, a recent Indiana Youth Survey found that 15.6% of 12th graders had consumed alcohol within the past month, and nearly 7% had used marijuana. These numbers are down slightly from previous years, but they highlight the ongoing need for prevention, education, and accessible treatment options.
