Understanding Drug & Alcohol Addiction in Louisiana
A recent study released by the Louisiana Violence Experiences survey (LaVEX) shows that substance abuse and mental health issues are at epidemic proportions across the state, with data showing one in three Louisianans binge drink and one in eight use illicit drugs.
Louisiana’s Alcohol Addiction Landscape
Alcohol use disorders are another major challenge across Louisiana. Binge drinking and chronic heavy drinking remain significant problems in both urban and rural areas—18% of adults in Louisiana report binge drinking, higher than the national average. Cultural norms, economic hardship, and stress-related coping behaviors all contribute to high rates of alcohol misuse.
Among young people, nearly 27% of high school students reported drinking alcohol, with 11% reporting binge drinking. At Hickory Treatment Centers in Louisiana, we’re equipped to address these issues head-on. Our programs are designed to support individuals through every stage of recovery, from detox to long-term relapse prevention.

Louisiana’s Drug Addiction By the Numbers
Drug addiction impacts individuals, families, and entire communities throughout Louisiana. From bustling urban centers to quiet bayou towns, the need for effective, accessible treatment continues to grow.
According to the Louisiana Department of Health, drug overdose deaths have sharply increased in recent years, especially those involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl. In 2022, Louisiana reported more than 2,300 drug-related deaths—more than double the number from just five years earlier. Fentanyl, in particular, is often mixed with heroin, cocaine, or counterfeit pills, making it especially dangerous and unpredictable.
In addition to the opioid crisis, methamphetamine use has become a rising concern, especially in rural parishes. Meth is highly addictive and leads to long-term physical and mental health problems. Unfortunately, methamphetamine is also being found laced with fentanyl, further increasing the risk of overdose.
Prescription drug abuse—especially benzodiazepines like Xanax—is growing among both teens and adults in Louisiana. Many individuals begin taking these medications for legitimate reasons, such as anxiety or insomnia, only to develop a dependency that requires specialized care to overcome. Among young people, the Louisiana Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows that nearly one in five high school students report using marijuana regularly, and vaping-related substance use continues to rise.
