Motherhood and Addiction Recovery

Motherhood and Addiction Recovery

Being a mother is a tough job. Your children look to you for guidance and daily care. This can be tough to achieve if you’re under stress and struggling with alcohol or drug addiction. In addition, when a parent struggles with addiction, it affects the family as a whole, so it’s important to seek help.

Addiction Treatment

The first step in addiction recovery is treatment. At Hickory Treatment Centers, we provide help for both alcohol and drug addiction, as well as dual diagnosis. For those with strong family support, inpatient treatment is one of the best options. It removes you from the triggers of life and allows you to focus on detoxing and rehabilitation. It also provides round-the-clock supervision, which can be helpful for those with a dual diagnosis.

As a mother, it can be difficult to leave your children, and in some cases, you may not be able to. Outpatient care is another option. With outpatient care, you can receive treatment while your children are in school or daycare and then return home each night. Outpatient care provides the same types of therapy and support that inpatient care provides. During any treatment program, you’ll learn how to make lifestyle changes to keep you sober and drug free once you return home.

Addiction Recovery

Drug and alcohol rehabilitation is only the first step in the treatment process. Recovery steps should be taken to prevent a relapse. The recovery phase of drug and alcohol addiction is the maintenance phase of the treatment process. There are a few things you can do to help along the way.

Keep Your Appointments: You’ll likely have return appointments with your physician or with a treatment center. These appointments help address any needs that might pop up and can provide you with useful information during your recovery. In some cases, your physician will prescribe medications to assist you in recovery. You will need to be monitored while taking these prescriptions so modifications can be made as needed.

Find a Support Group: Group meetings provide a chance to interact with others who are going through similar circumstances. You’ll see first hand how others cope with recovery and discover ways to help you through any challenges that arise. Support groups include Alcohol’s Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. These groups also use a 12-step process to help you through recovery.

Rely on Family and Friends: A close network of family and friends can prove to be a valuable resource during recovery. Not only will you have someone to talk to, having someone to watch the children when you attend meetings or when you need alone time can be extremely helpful. If your children are older, you may want to talk to them briefly about what you’re going through, so they also understand.
