Enjoy the Game, Minus the Booze
Super Bowl Sunday is one of the top five biggest drinking days of the year. Beer, commercials, music, and sport is what it’s all about. Whether tailgating, watching from home, at a bar, or going to the game – it all traditionally revolves around food and alcohol which can be an obstacle for those who are sober or on their way to recovery. With booze being a centerfold of the day, it’s a minefield of temptation to slip back into old habits that can be uncomfortable and challenging – but not impossible. There are ways to enjoy the game and have fun without alcohol – it’s all about a shift in focus and planning ahead.
Both teams are preparing for game day this week and so can you. As they say, preparation is key. A great strategy is to be honest – with your friends, your family, and yourself. Being upfront with everyone is the best way to carve boundaries and set expectations. Those who truly care about you will respect your commitment and show their support. Bring a friend who is also sober so you don’t feel ostracized in any way – there is strength in numbers.
If attending a party where alcohol will be present, bring your own favorite drink and have an exit strategy in place just in case the need should arise. Have an idea of what you’ll say if you need to leave. A quick step outside or a short walk can be enough to reset, but if the setting becomes too much or you feel on the edge of making a decision you know you’ll regret, know that leaving is always an option – your health and sobriety must come first.
If the idea of being in that type of environment gives you anxiety, host your own game-day gathering to stay in control of the environment. Swap out beer and cocktails for a selection of fun, non-alcoholic drinks like sparkling water, iced tea, or creative mocktails. Lots of name brands are now adding non-alcoholic beverages to their lineup. Even Topo Chico has a list of mocktail recipes featuring their non-alcoholic beverages. With the sober curious movement on the rise, it’s becoming less taboo to not indulge in alcohol, making it that much easier to fit in and avoid temptations.
Make food the focus with football-focused themed snacks. Get your creativity flowing. Create a build-your-own nacho, hotdog, baked potato, or burger station. Set up a Super Bowl Square raffle to build the excitement for the game that leads up to something other than a “cheers.” Watching football together and joining in the excitement of the day can be whatever you make it.
Ultimately, Superbowl Sunday – and sports in general – doesn’t have to threaten your recovery. And more importantly, remember that recovery can be filled with fun. It can be a time to strengthen it. By prioritizing your well-being, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and finding new ways to show up, celebrate, and hang with friends and family, you can enjoy the hype of game day without compromising a single thing – including your sobriety.
